BEWARE!

YOUR HOUSING AND YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
MAY NOT BE SAFE!

Who are we?

The Concerned Citizens of Fridley is a grassroots, non-partisan group of citizens originated as the results of the Brandes Place development controversy. Our current concern is the present Comprehensive Plan for Fridley. The current Comprehensive Plan calls for the eventual conversion of nearly half of the existing single family detached homes into multiple family high-density housing. We are alarmed by this and wish to raise awareness; oppose this type of re-development; and re-insert the will of the people when planning for the future development of our city.

We have spent many months researching the Housing chapter of the current Comprehensive Plan and made recommendations to the city. We have participated in Housing Forums, attended Met Council seminars and spoken often at City Council meetings/hearings.

We greatly oppose the use of a mixed use zoning called S2 in residential neighborhoods. We oppose building high-density single family attached housing in R1 zoning. We oppose the warehousing of people whether it be in townhouses for low-income or five story “condos” for seniors.

We need all the voices we can gather to stop the city from pursuing the concept of Smart Growth in our city. We meet monthly to discuss any and all neighborhood housing issues. For more information call Joanne at 763-571-2241 or Pam at 763-571-8453.

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED

  • Fridley already meets the standard for housing density set by the Metropolitan Council.
  • Fridley already meets the standard for affordable housing set by the Met Council.
  • The Met Council has no enforcement power for housing decisions.
  • No ones property is totally safe from the coveting eye of a developer.
  • Our best defense against unneeded and unwanted development is an amended Comprehensive Plan.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  • Fridley citizens want to retain the housing character of Fridley.
  • Fridley citizens want revitalization of R1 housing with remodeling and maintenance incentives.
  • Fridley citizens want replacement of dilapidated R1 housing with “move-up” housing or Habitat for Humanity housing.
